If you knew you would fail with severe consequences, would you still try?
Take these two examples:
You are an avid hiker, but have recently suffered a broken arm. Deep in the forrest, far from civilization, you happen across a woman struggling with two men trying to rape her. These two guys, who are WAY bigger than you, turn out to be armed, but that hardly matters because even if you were armed and they weren't, you'd get beat up. They see you and tell you to keep walking. Do you try to help her, even though you know for sure that it's utterly hopeless?
2: You live in a country that hates jewish people. The government pumps propoganda into the people, and everyone's wearing swazticas (sp?), and everyone trusts the government, so they wear the swazticas and rant about hating jews. You insist that jews aren't bad, and you preach and you preach, but nobody listens, and you come to the conclusion that it's hopeless. Furthermore, you receive threats that insist that if you keep preaching, you will be taken out. Do you still try to turn people around?

You never know if you're going to truly fail unless you try. There are those situations that look like a lose/lose situation, but you never know the impact that you can have by just having a word or a reaction.
