If you wish to run a simulator with simulation software, wouldn't you use software that is fit
as opposed to using the simulator to debug itself ?

I mean, it's not rocket science. You wouldn't head off to Mt Erebus Antarctica with faulty navigation software and use the system to debug itself while you were in flight.
If you wish to run a simulator with simulation software, wouldn't you use software that is fit for purpose,
so it's your contention that one should write an even more complicated system to debug one's simulation software.
i don't agree. for example, some years ago, a simulator was written to examine the effects on our perception, of traveling at the speed of light. occasionally while running, strange results would come out. almost always, they were the result of errors in the design or coding of the simulator.
clearly it would be nice if one could completely debug all programs before using them. however, computer programs are some of the most complicated things produced by people. debugging them is quite complicated.
a story. when i was a newby programmer, i worked on a system that modified how we opened a file. when i told my boss that i thought it was ready, he said something like, "Well, you'll need to test all of the combinations, of course." so, i went back to my desk and did some calculations. very quickly i found 32,000 different combinations, in just the basic parameters. when presented with that, the request changed a bit.
applied to your idea, the 32,000 combinations just applied to opening a single file. the thought of completely debugging a system is just not feasible.
