Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM - distance?
Hi there, does anybody know what will be the maximum distance of this lens to fill the focus with 10 cent coin 1:1?

Most of us who shoot macro to a specific image ratio do not care now close we have to put the lens to the subject except for two reasons.
1) When the lens may cast a shadow on the subject or
2) When shooting venomous snakes
Just set your lens to 1:1 and then move the camera in and out to get focus. When shooting things like coins and stamps, it is usually easier to use at copy stand.

I have that lens. At 1:1, it's a foot (from "film plane to subject")
Any movement at all will cause blurry photo--so you have to really use a tripod. It's quite difficult to shoot at 1:1 without one.
Reply:I will read your mind and see if this interests you. This photo show a dime from 60 cm distance shot with a 95 mm lens. I used 95 just because it's a zoom lens and that's as close as I got with one trial shot. There wouldn't be very much difference anyway.

With a macro lens, you will obtain a 1:1 magnification at the minimum focusing distance. This page tell you that you will need to be 5.9" from the subject (measured to the film plane) to get 1:1. [NOTE: See below for clarification]
