Macro Lens Question - Slightly technical?
If a macro lens goes to a 1:1 magnification and the closest focus on that lens is 8.8 inches, would you have to be at 8.8 inches to obtain the 1:1 magnification? I am measuring the distance from the subject to the film plane or focal plane indicator.
I believe this to be true and my measurements seem to bear this out, but I'm looking for an educated photographer to confirm my amateur knowledge.

What you say is true, the actual distance from the subject at 1:1 is determined by the focal length of the lens and it's always twice the focal length. And is measured from the focal plane (where the film/sensor is).
Don't forget the crop factor of an APS sized sensor has to be taken into account.
Sticking my neck out here, from your dimension of 8.8" (223.52mm) I would say your using a 70mm macro on a Canon camera (1.6 crop factor) which would work out to 224mm, close enough? Oh and your depth of field will be a tad over 5mm, though that can vary slightly depending on lens design, but only by 3 or 4%.
Unless your doing the shot for scientific reasons and using CS3 Extended to measure angles size etc., don't get bogged down with mathematics. Just frame your shot on more aesthetic grounds. Good pictures are more of an Art than a Science.
